The Athletic claim Marc Overmars has chosen to reject a move to Newcastle United and remain at Ajax, despite holding initial talks about targets.

Overmars, 48, was linked with a move to Newcastle to work as the club’s sporting director, or director of football, after starring in his role at Ajax.

A Premier League winner at Arsenal, Overmars is renowned for bringing in huge wealth at Ajax from transfers – and overseeing youth development.

The Dutch genius has played a big hand in the rise of Matthijs de Ligt, Frenkie de Jong, Donny van de Beek and more – before selling them on.

Not only has he brought in big money, but his incoming signings have proven value for money. A lot have come the Premier League.

The likes of Dusan Tadic, Daley Blind and Seb Haller were signed for cut-price fees, but are shining for Ajax. No surprise to see Newcastle keen, then.

Overmars rejects Newcastle: Perhaps not so much of a surprise

It was always going to be tricky to tempt Overmars with leaving Ajax – a club he played for 189 times. But it is a blow for Newcastle.

The club, as per the Athletic, held talks with Overmars – at an initial level. But it is more rejection for Newcastle, with Howe set to come in.

Howe is likely to be announced as manager on Monday, after Unai Emery rejected Newcastle in a public statement last week.

So, Newcastle will be forced to look elsewhere. Luis Campos, Jason Wilcox, Michael Edwards and more have been linked with the role.
