Report: Al-Ittihad open talks with Arsenal over Mohamed Elneny

Arsenal midfielder, Mohamed Elneny, could be on his way to Saudi Arabia this summer, with reports claiming that Al-Ittihad want to bring the Egyptian midfielder to the Middle East.

News outlet Al-Madina reports that Ittahad have already prepared a contract offer for Elneny, and that the player’s agent has already flown out to Saudi to inspect the details of the deal.

It is also suggested that the Saudi club have made direct contact with Arsenal. That could hint at a deal being done in January, when Elneny will be free to negotiate with clubs anyway. The midfielder has yet to sign a new contract in north London, and sees his current one expire in the summer.

Despite starting the midweek loss at Old Trafford, Elneny is down the pecking order under Mikel Arteta. Thomas Partey is the main man in midfield. Meanwhile, the club spent big money on Albert Lokonga in the summer, while Ainsley Maitland-Niles is also still around.

Elneny has had plenty of interest already. Clubs in Turkey are also keen, with Fenerbahce the main party over there.

TBR’s View: Arsenal need to move Elneny on for everyone’s sake

It’s not that Mohamed Elneny is a bad player. Far from it. It’s just that he doesn’t seem to fit the profile of player Arteta wants to build around. So to see him in the XI at Manchester United in midweek was a bit baffling for fans.

With his contract running down, there is simply no reason to keep Elneny around. Yes, he is decent back up in the squad, but he isn’t going to sign new terms, so someone else might as well step in.

There are a plethora of youngsters at The Emirates who would love his minutes. Therefore, allowing Elneny to go in January would make little difference to this Arsenal squad.
