Voetbal International has claimed that Ajax are looking to blow Tottenham Hotspur and Jose Mourinho aside to sign Southampton midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg this summer – as he enters the final 12 months of his contract.
Hojbjerg, 24, has been stripped of the captain’s armband at Southampton with the 33-time Denmark international refusing to sign a new contract. He is expected to leave the Saints this summer, for a fee in the region of £35million (Mail).
Tottenham have been strongly linked with a move for the ex-Bayern Munich star, with Arsenal and Everton also suggested as potential suitors back in the January window. Spurs have retained an interest in the midfielder even now.
But the latest report states that Ajax are looking to beat Tottenham. A move to Ajax could materialise, with Hojbjerg having worked under Ajax manager Erik Ten Haag during his spell as Bayern’s reserve team manager between 2013 and 2015.
Hojbjerg is represented by Pini Zahavi, who according to TransferMarkt, also represents Robert Lewandowski and Wilfried Zaha.
TBR’s view – Spurs cannot afford to lose Hojbjerg race
Since Mousa Dembele left, Spurs have struggled. Their form began to decline in the lead up to the Champions League final following Dembele’s exit in January 2019 – and they have struggled to recover, even after a change in manager.
Tanguy Ndombele was supposedly his replacement but that has not worked. The north London club need a strong, aggressive midfielder that is equally impressive in attack and defence. Hojbjerg is perfect, and Spurs must secure a deal for the Dane.
