According to The Athletic, agents still think Lucas Paqueta could join Newcastle United before the transfer window shuts in about three weeks’ time.

The Magpies have been heavily linked with a move for the Brazilian midfielder, who is a star at Lyon. He scored 10 goals and provided seven assists in all competitions last season, and a number of Premier League clubs are said to be interested in his services.

Agents still think Lucas Paqueta could join Newcastle this summer

Back in the January transfer window, before Newcastle bought Bruno Guimaraes from Lyon, the Magpies reportedly tried to sign Paqueta. However, they failed in their attempts.

That, however, hasn’t stopped the rumours. Paqueta has constantly been linked with a move to Newcastle, but it really does feel like the Tranquillo Barnetta story all over again for the Magpies.

However, the report claims that agents still view Paqueta to Newcastle as a ‘live situation’. It is still believed that the Brazilian could end up with his good pal Bruno at St James’ Park before the end of this month.

The report also suggests that James Maddison remains the priority, but he is proving to be unattainable in this window because of Leicester City’s reluctance to let him go.

That’s another reason why Paqueta could become Newcastle’s main target, and he really would be an ‘extraordinary‘ signing for Howe’s side.

TBR View:

If Newcastle need a precedent to convince themselves that Paqueta would be a good signing, they should just look at the last player they signed from Lyon.

Paqueta really is a fantastic player. He mainly operates as a number 10 – a position Newcastle need to strengthen – but he’s also capable of playing as a number eight or out wide.

The Brazilian is still only 25 as well, which means his best years are clearly ahead of him.

With Arsenal’s interest in the Paqueta seemingly cooling, this could be Newcastle’s best chance to make a move for him. Whether they will lodge a bid in the coming days, however, remains to be seen.
