The Northern Echo have claimed that Inter Milan star Valentino Lazaro’s agent was in the stands as Newcastle United secured a last-minute win over Chelsea at St. James’ Park, and that a move is edging closer.

Last week, Italian journalist Alfredo Pedulla claimed Newcastle were in pole position to sign 23-year-old Lazaro. It remains to be seen if a deal will be on loan or permanent, but the 28-time Austria international did only sign for Inter last summer.

Newcastle have suffered a with an extensive injury list this season, worsened by Jetro Willems going down with a knee problem in the first half on Saturday evening. Lazaro can play on either side of the defence, and on either wing.

Now, Lazaro could be on the move just six months after his £20million (Goal) move from RedBull Salzburg and everything is pointing towards a transfer to Newcastle before the end of this month’s window.

TBR’s view – Lazaro is a top player, and a much-needed signing

Not only is Lazaro a top player that had a hand in 38 goals during 121 appearances for Salzburg – which included him playing in defence and midfield – but he is one that is seriously needed by Steve Bruce.

The Toon needed additions out wide anyway to act as cover for Miguel Almiron and Allan Saint-Maximin, but the club now desperately need a player that can play on the left side of defence – with Willems injured.

Lazaro can act as cover for multiple positions, but he can also add enormous quality to Newcastle’ side.
