AC Milan have potentially handed Arsenal and Spurs a boost in their pursuit of Mario Gotze, according to a report from Calciomercato.

The German World Cup winner, who scored the winning goal in the 2014 final, is expected to move away from the Bundesliga this summer on a free transfer.

Gotze is thought to prefer a move to Serie A, with Roma and AC both said to be keen. However, this latest report claims that Milan won’t be signing Gotze.

It is believed the German is demanding around £8m in signing-on fees. That number has put the Rossoneri off, with the seven-time European Cup winners apparently deciding against signing the 27-year-old.

That, of course, could open the door for both Spurs and Arsenal. The Sun reported that Spurs and Jose Mourinho were keen on landing the former Bayern Munich man. Arsenal have also been credited with an interest last year. (Metro)

Gotze has found game time hard to come by this season with Dortmund. He’s started just five times this season and 13 overall in the league.

The big nugget to take from this stance from AC Milan is the wage demands put forward by Gotze.

It’s all well and good signing a player on a free transfer but when they then ask for a huge sum just to sign, questions need to be raised.

Gotze is a fine player on his day. However, he’s not had too many of those days in recent years. Since winning the World Cup in 2014 he’s not quite hit the heights many might have expected.

Still, in today’s market, £8m is not a lot of money. If Spurs or Arsenal are serious about landing Gotze, then they might just have to stump up the cash.
