Report: Aberdeen hoping to sign Celtic captain Scott Brown today

The Press & Journal have claimed that new Aberdeen manager Stephen Glass is set to complete his first signing since taking over at Pittodrie today – in the form of Celtic captain Scott Brown in a player-assistant role.

Brown, 35, has spent 14 years at Celtic since joining the club from Hibernian back in 2007. Clocking up 612 appearances for Celtic in all competitions – he has won 22 honours with the Hoops, including 10 league titles.

However, the lack of manager at Celtic has seen Brown decide to reject a new one-year deal with the Hoops and has instead been enticed to sign a two-year Aberdeen deal. He will continue playing, but also as an assistant to Glass.

The report states that Glass, who is set to fly in to Scotland from America where he has been managing Atlanta United, is hopeful that Brown will put pen to paper on a pre-contract deal with Aberdeen today [Thursday].

TBR’s view – Brown departure a big loss for Celtic

Both on the pitch and off of it, and it is another reason to blame the Celtic board. The Hoops’ hierarchy inability to bring a manager in quickly has seen Brown decide to reject the chance to stay – and instead move to Aberdeen.

What it could do, though, is prove to be an apprenticeship in terms of coaching and prepare Brown to eventually take over at Celtic – which seems inevitable if the 55-time international wants to go into management.
