Report: £60m World Cup attacker's countrymen have been telling him how exciting Newcastle project is

Newcastle United have been linked with England international James Maddison in recent months.

The Northern Echo recently claimed that the Magpies have put the Leicester City star at the top of their January wishlist.

Now, Chronicle Live has reported that Maddison’s Three Lions teammates have been talking Newcastle up to him.

The Tyneside outlet claims Newcastle ‘are almost certainly going to have James Maddison punted their way ahead of the January window’.

This is because the Foxes ace will have been ‘told at first-hand what an exciting project is unfolding at Newcastle’.

However, the report also suggests the Magpies hierarchy will be wary of launching another approach for Maddison.

In summer, Newcastle were reportedly ‘led to believe there was a deal to be done’ for the 26-year-old.

The Magpies apparently ‘followed all the demands before being told no at £50million’.

And unless Leicester present a ‘no-nonsense deal’, the Newcastle board will move onto other targets.

Maddison has been one of the most sought-after Premier League players of the last few transfer windows.

Indeed, he forced his way into Gareth Southgate’s England plans for the World Cup thanks to his dazzling form.

Maddison has seven goals and four assists from just 13 league appearances this term.

His heroics have helped Leicester pull away from the bottom three, and they’re now in 13th in the table.

Maddison would be a superb acquisition for Newcastle, a versatile player who can feature as a playmaker, winger and second striker.

His talent, age and current club (one not in Europe) mean he shouldn’t be out of Newcastle’s reach.

However, the Magpies have made it clear many times that they won’t be paying premiums just because of PIF’s wealth.

Maddison is reportedly valued at £60million, so it remains to be seen whether the Magpies are willing to go that high.
