Report: 40-year-old boss suggested as eventual successor to Leeds manager
The Athletic say the links between Victor Orta and out-of-work gaffer Diego Martinez could see him be the eventual replacement for Marcelo Bielsa.
Bielsa, 66, is in his fourth season as Leeds manager – clocking up 149 games as gaffer. He has managed more matches at Leeds than any other job.
That includes 113 games at Athletic Bilbao, and six years in charge of Argentina’s national side. But there are doubts over his long-term future.
Bielsa put pen to paper on another one-year deal last summer – that is is style. But who knows whether the Argentine will remain next season.
For Leeds fans, it will be like ripping the heart out of the club. Whoever does replace Bielsa, will have enormous boots to fill to replace him.
The Athletic report that a potential successor to Bielsa is 40-year-old Martinez. He sparkled in his most-recent role as Granada manager.
Who is Diego Martinez, potentially the next Leeds boss?
Gaining promotion with Granada in 18-19, his first season, he guided his side to seventh in La Liga in 2019-20. Last season, Granada finished ninth.
A brilliant three-year spell, in which he managed 146 games, came to an end last summer and he remains without a job. He is close to Orta.
The report from the Athletic suggests that when Bielsa does go, Martinez will be the one that Orta turns to to step into the current gaffer’s role.
His CV is impressive – starring as Granada boss. But could he replicate Bielsa’s successes? Who knows. Bielsa might not even leave, just yet.
