A player reportedly sought after by Newcastle United is in line to be sold this summer due to his club’s perilous finances, according to a report in Le10 Sport.

The Magpies are one of several Premier League clubs linked with Marseille midfielder Morgan Sanson, along with Everton, Aston Villa and West Ham, claims Buzzsport.

Sanson has been impressive for Andre Villas-Boas’ charges this season, making 30 appearances in all competitions including 27 in Ligue 1, with five goals and five assists to boot.

The 25-year-old’s efforts have helped Marseille finish second in the league – which was settled on Points Per Game – but the club doesn’t exactly appear to be doing well financially.

With Marseille under pressure to raise £100million to avoid potential Financial Fair Play sanctions, the football shutdown has come at the worst possible time for them.

Indeed, Le10 Sport has described Marseille’s finances as being in a “catastrophic state” and as a result, plenty of their main playing assets are expected to be offloaded to raise funds.

Sanson, along with Boubacar Kamara, are thought to be first in line to be sold.

As well as being technically gifted, Sanson is known for his tenacity and seemingly endless engine.

Kamara previously provided a glowing appraisal of his teammate, telling La Provence: “He is athletic. He is a creator. I sometimes wonder how he can think of certain actions on the pitch.

“He has several lungs, he helps us a lot, he sacrifices himself to open spaces for us. He is evolving. For me, he is a very good player and he will become a very great player.”

Sanson is also versatile, having played in defensive midfield and attacking midfield, and has a knack for claiming goals and assists – just the kind of player for a reborn Newcastle to build a team around, then.
