Sporting Lisbon winger Marcus Edwards is now seen as one of the best players in Portugal after leaving Tottenham Hotspur, according to the Athletic.

Edwards left Spurs back in 2019 as he joined Portuguese outfit Vitoria on a free transfer (The Telegraph).

The north London club agreed a 50 percent sell-on fee that has now passed over to Edwards’ contract at Sporting Lisbon.

The 23-year-old is now starting to live up to his potential in Portugal, after a difficult start to his career at Spurs.

The Athletic reports that if Edwards continues to play at his current level, he will be judged as one of the best players in the Primeira Liga.

The outlet notes his boss Ruben Amorim recently reminded him in a press conference to keep working hard in training.

But the complaints that Tottenham had about Edwards’ application have certainly not re-emerged in Portugal.

Spurs will undoubtedly have some regrets about how good Edwards has become and the fact he couldn’t achieve this in north London.

There were clearly concerns over the player’s attitude and application in training at the time. But maybe it was best for the player to rebuild his career abroad.

The English winger has been putting in some dazzling displays in Portugal and in the Champions League for Sporting.

Edwards helped Amorim’s men beat Spurs 2-0 at the Ruben Avalade Stadium last month and looked a class act during.

He’s already registered three goals and as many assists in just 10 appearances in the Portuguese league this season.

If Edwards continues on his current trajectory, he looks set to be a star of the future. And Spurs may just regret that he wasn’t able to develop into a star at Hotspur Way.

Antonio Conte’s men will come up against Edwards once again tonight in the Champions League. A win would secure Spurs’ place in the last-16 of the competition.
