According to ESPN, Neymar is now considering an exit from Paris Saint-Germain, with Newcastle one of three clubs who can afford him.

What’s the story?

Well, this is big news.

Neymar – who became the most expensive footballer ever when PSG spent £200m on him in 2017 – is now thinking about an exit from Paris, after discovering that the French giants are happy for him to depart.

ESPN add that only three clubs can afford to sign the Brazilian, with RMC Sport claiming that Newcastle are one of them, along with Chelsea and Manchester United.

The Parisians seem to be taking a different approach this summer, with Luis Campos now working as Sporting Director and Mauricio Pochettino set to be replaced by Christophe Galtier.

Senior figures at Newcastle have already laughed off talk of Neymar joining the Magpies, although that was before ESPN revealed that he is thinking about leaving.

Joelinton has also invited the 30-year-old to join him on Tyneside, as he told Cast Futebol Clube that Bruno Guimaraes has the South American’s number and encouraged him to call.

The news comes after Neymar scored 13 goals in 28 appearances last season, while also providing eight assists.

Newcastle should avoid Neymar

In our view, Amanda Staveley and Mehrdad Ghodoussi would undo all of their good work if they brought Neymar to St James’ Park this summer.

The sensible signings of Nick Pope, Sven Botman and Bruno Guimaraes have been measured transfers, who carry decent resale value and are likely to improve under Eddie Howe.

At the age of 30, Neymar is effectively the finished article, and he would be a potentially problematic signing given his profile and salary demands.

Howe worked hard to build a strong harmony at Newcastle last season, and in our view, he would risk unravelling that if he signed the PSG outcast.

However, anything can happen in the transfer window, so be sure to keep an eye on Neymar’s situation.
