The Mail claim Newcastle are set to suffer rejection in their pursuit of Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers – as he hold out for the Manchester City gig.

Rodgers, 48, is regarded as one of the best British managers in the game at the moment, if not the best. His work at Leicester has been excellent.

It follows a simply unbeatable spell at Celtic, in which he won 118 of his 169 games in charge. He currently has a 51% win rate during his Leicester spell.

The report stats that Rodgers, who earns £192,000 a week at Leicester (TalkSPORT), will reject the chance to take over at Newcastle, if approached.

That is because he is aware that he is on a shortlist of managers to replace Pep Guardiola at Manchester City. He has admirers at The Etihad.

The ex-Barcelona gaffer is expected to leave after the 2022-23 campaign. Rodgers is one of the main contenders to take over from the Spaniard.

Newcastle blow as Rodgers waits for Manchester City, always a dream

While Rodgers has been strongly linked with replacing Steve Bruce, it is always seemed like a pipe dream. He is shining as Leicester gaffer.

European football, in with a shout of the top four and backed by one of the best owners in the Premier League. Would he really leave Leicester?

Not for Newcastle. There are only a handful of clubs Rodgers could be swayed by and Manchester City are one of those.

But it always seemed unlikely. Newcastle are much more likely to appoint someone out of work – a Frank Lampard, a Lucien Favre or others.
