Report: £176k-a-week Man City target set for crunch contract talks, his deal expires next summer
Reported Manchester City target Sergi Roberto is set for crunch talks with FC Barcelona president Joan Laporta.
According to Mundo Deportivo, the Spanish international will sit down with the club official to discuss a new deal. Roberto’s contract with Barcelona expires next summer. And whilst the Catalan side have offered the defender a new deal, the 29-year-old has not agreed to anything.
Like most players at Barcelona, Roberto has been offered a reduced wage to combat the club’s €1.3bn debt. However, unlike Gerard Pique and Sergio Busquets, the fullback has not accepted a pay decrease. As per Salary Sport, the defender earns £176,000-a-week.
Roberto was linked with City for most of the summer window, with Barcelona signing two players from the Premier League champions during the off-season in Sergio Aguero and Eric Garcia.
Indeed, Barcelona were also reportedly keen on the likes of Bernardo Silva and Joao Cancelo. However, no offers were made for the City stars, who all stayed in Manchester over the summer.
Moreover, City seemingly didn’t make an official offer for Roberto. Despite Pep Guardiola being a fan of the versatile Barcelona star, it appears that the former manager of the Catalan side is eager to wait and see how his contract dispute plays out.
With talks not going well, there is a chance that City could pounce to sign Roberto should the opportunity present itself in the coming weeks. And given the Barcelona star’s ability to play as both fullback and midfielder, he could be a useful signing for Guardiola’s side.
