Regular Newcastle star admits having an inconsistent season

Newcastle United defender Jamaal Lascelles has admitted he has had an inconsistent season.

The Magpies head into the final round of fixtures this weekend having easily staved off relegation, and they will be playing Premier League football once again in 2018/19.

It’s been a brilliant collective effort from the Toon Army following a lack of investment last summer and tough first third of the season.

Newcastle didn’t win their first game of the season until November 3 against Watford, and centre-back Lascelles reckons the club’s winless run was when he was at his worst.

He said, as quoted by Chronicle Live: “Maybe the first half of the season, on a personal level, it wasn’t my best.

“Some games I did well, some games not as well, so maybe I should have been a bit more consistent.

“But I think I’ve found in the last few months performances have started to pick up.”

TBR’s view

Lascelles hasn’t had his greatest season.

Arguably, the captain has actually been Newcastle worst-performing defender this term out of him, Fabian Schar, Federico Fernandez and Florian Lejeune.

Certainly in terms of consistency he has been the weakest – every now and then Lascelles has thrown in some commanding displays fans expect from him as captain.

Next term though he will need to step up, because the three others have all proven they’re good enough to actually replace him.
