'Recovered': Antonio Conte says £12m Tottenham player is no longer injured and will be fit for Boxing Day
Davies picked up a stomach injury during Wales’ 3-0 defeat to England at the World Cup last month.
Football.London reported at the time that the £12 million defender could be sidelined for up to four weeks, meaning he was in danger of missing Tottenham’s return to Premier League action next Monday.
But the Welshman seems to be way ahead of schedule and Conte has revealed that he returned to training at Hotspur Way last week.
Conte says Davies will be fit for Boxing Day
Conte spoke to Spurs Play ahead of Tottenham’s friendly match against Nice this evening.
The Italian delivered a positive update on the fitness of Davies, but suggested Rodrigo Bentancur won’t be back until the beginning of next year.
“Ben Davies is okay and started to work with us last week. He has recovered,” Conte said.
“Rodrigo has started to work. I think that he’s going to be good for the game against Aston Villa.”
Bentancur sustained a groin injury while playing in Uruguay’s final group stage game against Ghana at the World Cup.
Elsewhere, Richarlison picked up a hamstring injury in Qatar and Conte revealed that Heung-Min Son hasn’t trained for two days because he’s ill.
While Spurs’ injury concerns certainly aren’t ideal for Conte, it could have been a whole lot worse and it looks like Bentancur should be back in time for the clash with Villa on New Year’s Day.
It’s certainly a big boost for the Italian that Davies is back ahead of schedule, especially as there are doubts over whether Cristian Romero will be ready to play on Boxing Day after winning the World Cup with Argentina.
In Romero’s absence before the international break, the Italian boss deployed Clement Lenglet in the middle of the back-three and moved Eric Dier to the right-hand side. With Davies back from injury, Conte will be able to name a similar back-three if Romero isn’t ready to feature.
