‘Really top player’: Sky Sports pundit raves about ‘outstanding’ Liverpool ace linked with Anfield exit

Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has named Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum in his Premier League Team of the Season amid reports that Inter Milan want to sign him this summer.

The Netherlands international has been a key member of Jurgen Klopp’s squad since his Anfield arrival from Newcastle in the summer of 2016, with 38 appearances under his belt this term.

However, Wijnaldum will be entering the final year of his contract in July and Tuttomercatoweb claims that Inter could look to land the midfielder’s services with a bid worth £26million.

When it came to picking his XI, Merson selected a three-man midfield of Wijnaldum, Liverpool teammate Jordan Henderson, and Manchester City man Kevin De Bruyne.

“He’s got to go in for me,” the Arsenal legend wrote on Sky Sports about the Dutchman.

“Another outstanding performer for Liverpool. I put him down as a big-game player. He gets big goals in big games.

“There are a lot of players around who score a lot of goals, but if you weigh their goals up, they’ll get the third or fourth in a 4-0 win, or they’ll get the consolation goal in a 5-1 defeat.

“Another really top player, who goes under the radar in Jurgen Klopp’s team.”

Liverpool and Wijnaldum are yet to reach agreement on a new deal, but given how impressive he has been for the Reds, surely they want to keep him on board.

The 29-year-old, meanwhile, has previously left the door open on a possible move away (talkSPORT), so it remains to be seen what happens in the coming months.

If Liverpool cannot agree a new deal with Wijnaldum, they may be tempted to get some money for him as opposed to seeing his contract run down and possibly losing him for nothing.
