'Really surprised': Gary Neville suggests Arteta should have subbed on 25-year-old Arsenal player vs United

Gary Neville has suggested Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta should have brought on Kieran Tierney in Sunday’s loss at Manchester United.

On 74 minutes, with the score at 2-1 to United at Old Trafford, the Gunners boss made a triple substitution to try and get back in the game.

But Arsenal lost their shape and were 3-1 down within a minute as Marcus Rashford grabbed his second goal of the game.

Speaking on the Overlap, Neville questioned Arteta’s substitutes and said that if Zinchenko was not fit enough to last 90 minutes, Tierney should have come on.

Neville says Arteta should have brought on Tierney

Neville said: “Why did he make those subs?

“I’ve been a manager for a very short period and I understand that making substitutions is one of the most difficult things to do, whether you’re 1-0 up, whether you’re drawing or you’re 1-0 down.

“But I was really surprised, particularly coming through the Pep Guardiola school of Pep just chases a game the same way all the time. Why did he go the way he did so far out with 20 minutes to go?

It was then put to Neville that Zinchenko was a doubt previously and may not have been fit to play 90 minutes, but he replied: “But Tierney is on the bench. He could have kept the balance on that left hand side.”

Tierney, 25, played the last two Arsenal games, 2-1 home wins over Fulham and Aston Villa respectively but was dropped to the bench in favour of Zinchenko on Sunday.

Arteta tried to be bold in order to claw something back from a game his side played well in but it swiftly backfired.

Gabriel Martinelli went to left-back as they chased the game against Fulham but similarly cavalier tactics did not work at Old Trafford.

Now, it is all about how Arsenal recover, with a Europa League trip to Zurich on Thursday and then a Premier League meeting with Everton to come.
