Aston Villa fans have taken to Twitter to react after Tottenham announced the signing of Pierluigi Gollini on a season-long loan from Atalanta.

What’s the story?

Does the name ring a bell? It should do.

The 26-year-old made 20 appearances for the Villans during the Roberto Di Matteo days, but didn’t really set Villa Park alight due to his poor displays.

Gollini conceded 17 goals in his 20 outings, and kept just six clean sheets.

In fairness to the 1-cap Italy international, he was only 21 when he arrived in the Midlands, and was far from the glovesman he is now.

Gollini left Aston Villa for Atalanta, where he has made a name for himself by starring for the Serie A side domestically and in the Champions League.

In our view, despite his move to Tottenham, Aston Villa were right to offload Gollini.

It just wasn’t working out for the Italian at Villa Park, and you can’t really argue that it was wrong to sell him.

Of course, eyebrows will be raised after a big club in Tottenham moved to bring him back to England.

However, he’s a completely different player now.

Aston Villa have one of the Premier League’s best shot-stoppers in Emiliano Martinez now anyway, so everyone’s a winner.

For now, let’s see how the Aston Villa fans on Twitter reacted to Tottenham’s club announcement
