'Really great' title winner dismisses Tottenham Hotspur transfer links
Antonio Conte‘s arrival at Tottenham Hotspur gave rise to a number of rumours about Spurs being interested in Inter Milan players. (Sport Mediaset)
The Italian changed Inter’s fortunes when he was there. He helped them win the league last season and one player who was integral to his side’s success was Dutch defender Stefan de Vrij.
The 29-year-old played 88 times under Conte during his two seasons there and he was incredible. He was arguably Inter’s best defender and with Tottenham now reportedly looking for a new centre-half, de Vrij would be a phenomenal signing.
The Dutchman was directly asked about rumours linking him with a move to Tottenham. Here’s what he said…
Stefan de Vrij dismisses Tottenham links
The Inter Milan star sat down for an interview with Sport Nieuws ahead of Holland’s World Cup qualifier against Montenegro this weekend.
Asked to confirm or deny rumours linking him with a reunion with Conte at Tottenham, he said: “Deny! Because I don’t know anything about anything.
“The connection was maybe made a bit quickly because the trainer I have worked with is now working there. But I don’t know anything. He (Conte) hasn’t approached me about it yet.”
TBR View:
De Vrij seems pretty clear that there has been no contact from Tottenham or his ex-boss Conte. However, the January transfer window is over seven weeks away and a lot can still happen by then.
The Dutchman, labelled as a ‘really great’ defender by Ronald Koeman, knows exactly what Conte demands from his defenders. He is positionally disciplined, is good in the air and can play out from the back.
He would be a fantastic addition for Tottenham in the January transfer window. He’ll have just 18 months left on his deal as well, which could make him available for a bargain fee, but Inter will do everything they possibly can to keep hold of him.
