Newcastle United have seemingly won the race to land highly-rated teenager Reagan Thomson ahead of Old Firm duo Celtic and Rangers – after Thomson confirmed on his Instagram that he had moved to Newcastle.
Thomson, 16, broke into the starting eleven of Scottish League Two side Queen’s Park this season – managing nine senior games before Newcastle came calling. The midfielder also has three Scotland Under-17 caps.
The Scottish Sun claimed that Rangers and Celtic were interested in Thomson and even though the Hoops tabled a late offer for the Scot, it appears Newcastle have won the race to land Thomson – who faced Celtic’s reserves in the Chellenge Cup this term.
It is believed Queen’s Park are set to receive a fee of around £50,000 plus bonuses for Thomson, who will join up with Newcastle’s Under-23 side. He posted on Instagram to say he is “buzzing” to sign for Newcastle, though the club are yet to confirm such a deal.

TBR’s view – Is Newcastle the right move over Rangers and Celtic?
Without a doubt. A move to either Rangers or Celtic would have given Thomson little chance of breaking into the senior side, with both Old Firm outfits reluctant to bring through youth.
Only rare examples over the past couple of years exist. Celtic did boast Kieran Tierney while Mikey Johnstone continues to shine. Rangers have Dapo Mebude and Jamie Barjonas, but neither are anywhere near the starting eleven.
At Newcastle, though, the Longstaff brothers may have given Thomson hope. Both Sean – linked with Man United – and Matty have broken into the team, in Thomson’s position. That will give the young Scot hope – and he certainly made the right move.
