Former Arsenal hero Ray Parlour has told Talk Sport that he’d be delighted if the club signed John Stones during the transfer window.
The former right-winger was a guest on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast and made the comments on the show (Tuesday 14th January 2020)
Manchester City defender Stones has been linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium.
The Sun claims that the 25-year-old might seek a move in an attempt to revive his chances of playing for England at Euro 2020.
Stones had made just 14 appearances in all competitions this season and it would seem he is considering his future.
Parlour believes he’d be quality for Arsenal and it would allow David Luiz to play in a midfield role.
He told Talk Sport: “I’d be very, very happy if Arsenal brought someone like John Stones to the club.
“He’d definitely play. You could maybe play Sokratis alongside him, he’s probably the better defender currently at the club.
“He’s done alright as David Luiz, he’s been better. If you’re really struggling in midfield, you could put him there.
“He could play there, he’s got the range of passing. He’s got a mistake in him but he’s done well and people look up to him at the club.”
Mikel Arteta will surely attempt to sign a couple of new faces during January.
The Gunners are currently languishing down in tenth place in the Premier League and face a fight to secure European football.
Stones isn’t without his faults. The chance to sign a proven international footballer with plenty of miles on the clock can only be good, however.
Arsenal are lacking leaders at the moment and Stones can help in that department.
The centre-back has lost his way a little bit at the Etihad and a move might be fruitful for all parties.
Stones is paid £100,000-a-week at City and that kind of salary would fit nicely with the current structure at Arsenal.
If Arsenal could secure a deal for the central defender it would represent a positive step in the right direction.
The ex-Barnsley prospect will know all about Arteta having worked with him at City.
The Spaniard will trust Stones considerably and he could become a mainstay in the Gunners team for years to come.
