Arsenal legend Ray Parlour watched Martin Odegaard train in the Gunners’ pre-season tour in America, and he was really impressed.

Mikel Arteta took his side to the United States to get the lads ready for the upcoming campaign. Arsenal played three games on the other side of the pond – against Everton, Orlando City and Chelsea – and won all three.

New signing Gabriel Jesus was the star of the show, but Odegaard was quietly impressive too – not just in the games that he played, but also on the training ground, claims Parlour.

The Arsenal Invincible was with the Gunners team in the United States, and he was blown away by Odegaard.

Speaking on talkSPORT about what he noticed in Arsenal’s pre-season tour, Parlour said: “Odegaard, you see him in training, he is always on the ball.

“He’s a real example that they love their football. They can’t wait to get him out of the training field. That’s what you want as a manager.

“You want players that are really hungry to train hard and I have seen that when I was watching a couple of training sessions. You can see that they are really at it.

“That’s why they beat Chelsea 4-0 because they had a little bit more energy. And that’s down to training.”

The next Gunners skipper?

The new Premier League season is just a week away, but Arsenal are yet to name their captain.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was the last permanent owner of the skipper’s armband at the Emirates – it has been over eight months since he was stripped of his captaincy. Alexandre Lacazette was named the interim skipper, but he’s now gone too.

Mikel Arteta has to make a decision soon, and all signs suggest that Odegaard will be the next Arsenal captain. The Norwegian has donned the armband on numerous occasions already, and the Gunners boss has even claimed that he has all the qualities to lead the club.

Arsenal take on Sevilla tomorrow before facing Crystal Palace in the first game of the new Premier League season next week. We expect Arteta to name Odegaard as the club captain before his side heads down to Selhurst Park.
