Ray Parlour thinks £40m player will secure transfer to Tottenham over Arsenal

Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal played out a pulsating north London derby on Sunday.

Mikel Arteta’s side won the five-goal thriller to further boost their Premier League title hopes and win the bragging rights over their rivals.

Regardless of what happens to Arsenal or Tottenham during the final few weeks of the season, you feel a huge summer transfer window awaits both clubs and signing a striker could be on the agenda.

The Gunners have proven, with the fact that they have scored the most goals in England’s top-tier this season (85), that the number nine isn’t as paramount as it would be for a club like Tottenham.

Although, when Arsenal were knocked out of the Champions League by Bayern Munich, their manager did highlight the fact that his team doesn’t have that 30-goal striker, so perhaps his team will be swimming in that market when the transfer window re-opens.

Of course, if Arteta has the Premier League title in hand, then it would be a lot easier to prize in that player and sign whoever they want, as long as they can put the money on the table.

The same can’t be said for their neighbours at Hotspur Way, who after losing 3-2 in the north London derby, are now at huge risk of missing out on Champions League football.

From a financial perspective, and just trying to lure those top players to the club, it does decrease Ange Postecoglou’s chances of getting who he wants.

The name of Ivan Toney was put on the transfer table and Ray Parlour questioned the supposed ‘£60-80 million’ price tag on his head, as he told talkSPORT Breakfast (29/04/24 at 9:25 am).

Parlour feels the sought-after Brentford man might just secure a transfer to Tottenham over Arsenal this summer because he would suit them better.

Ivan Toney at Arsenal or Tottenham

“The price bracket is going to be interesting, there is a lot of talk about £60-80 million, which I think is a little bit too much money,” said Parlour.

“Now, Brentford have said ‘no, we are going to cut it down to £40 million’ and that’s more of a reasonable price you are going to pay for Ivan Toney – I do believe if he does go to a club, he will score goals. He is a great penalty-taker as well.

“I don’t think he fits into Arsenal and what they want to try and do. I don’t think he will go to Arsenal. Spurs will probably be in the hunt for him. That’s the sort of club he maybe goes to, who can bang you a goal in, after they lost Harry Kane.”

Ivan Toney’s season with Brentford

This could prove to be Toney’s final season with Brentford and it’s not ending the way he would have wanted.

The 28-year-old missed the first half of the Premier League campaign because of a betting ban, and since his return to action, he has scored four goals from 14 Premier League matches.

In recent times, Thomas Frank has decided to bench Toney, but he did start the 1-0 defeat to Everton over the weekend where he failed to make an impact.

In terms of form, he isn’t exactly ending on a high and is probably costing himself a place at Euro 2024 with England given his current form.

Ollie Watkins is ahead of Toney given his fine form for Aston Villa, whilst Bournemouth striker Dominic Solanke is also pushing to score 20 Premier League goals and get on that plane to Germany.
