Ray Parlour responds when asked if Arsenal should bring back Aaron Ramsey
Ray Parlour has told TalkSPORT (Friday, 6.50AM) that he believes Aaron Ramsey would have to take a “big pay-cut” to return to Arsenal. The Wales midfielder has been linked with a return to the Premier League, after struggling at Juventus. Parlour believes he could return to English football.
Ramsey, 30, only managed 19 starts during 2020-21 at Juventus after leaving the Gunners to join the Old Lady in 2019. Clocking up 30 appearances in total, Ramsey has only managed an entire 90 minutes on one occasion, scoring only two goals and creating five more.
His lack of game time, and form, is a stark contrast to the quality he is showing for Wales. Shining alongside Gareth Bale at Euro 2020, he has been excellent. He has been linked with a return to Arsenal – with a report this week claiming Juventus could try a swap deal for Thomas Partey.
Parlour was asked if he would take Ramsey back at Arsenal, and the ex-Gunners Invincible played a move down: “He’s had a really poor season at Juventus, his injury list has grown, it is a massive gamble. He would have to take a big pay cut.
“I’m sure lots of Premier League clubs would take him back. Maybe he will stay another year, or he’s not part of the plans and he will move. If he’s not playing, he will need to make a decision. Whether he comes back to Arsenal or not – well, he’s a top, top midfielder, if you can keep him fit.”
Ramsey return would leave Arsenal fans delighted, amid Parlour comments
But is it another example of Arsenal potentially signing a player who is entering the twilight of his career? They signed Willian on a three-year deal last summer from Chelsea but the Brazilian international was poor, scoring just once. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is struggling.
The Gabonese skipper signed a new deal after months of speculation. But he has failed to hit the heights he had shown before putting pen to paper. Ramsey is a class player, he is an Arsenal icon and a return would leave fans delighted. But could he be another example of an expensive waste?
