'Been brilliant': Ray Parlour so impressed with £35m Arsenal man

Ray Parlour has been singing the praises of Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka after the midfielder helped the Gunners beat Chelsea 1-0.

Xhaka has been a man reborn under Mikel Arteta. This season in particular, he is playing at a new level as Arteta plays him further forward.

No longer lacking the discipline that plagued his earlier days at the club, Xhaka is now one of the first names on the team. And speaking to Stadium Astro, former Gunner Parlour couldn’t praise the Swiss star enough.

“I think he’s been brilliant this season. He’s stepped up, he’s mature, one of the older players in the team. But he’s certainly been brilliant. He’s playing a bit more advanced now, a different sort of role. He’s popped up with a few goals as well which is always so important for a midfielder,” Parlour said on Stadium Astro.

“But yeah, the way he’s calmed down. I know we had that altercation at the end with Kovacic trying to wind him up. But he’s improved that as well, improved his discipline. He’s been a breath of fresh air. I think signing Zinchenko has pushed him. He’s had to up his game and he certainly has. If you ask any Arsenal fan they’ll say this isn’t the Xhaka we knew. He’s a totally different player now, he’s certainly been one of the best players this season.”

TBR’s View: Xhaka remains vital for Arsenal

Martin Keown called on Arteta to rest Xhaka last week, but that won’t be happening while ever he is playing as well as he is.

The Swiss midfielder has been absolutely outstanding for the Gunners. His overall performances, the way he leads, and his contribution in the final third is showing everyone just how good he can be.

Xhaka – who signed for around £35m – will hope to continue his fine form after the World Cup. And if he does, then Arsenal might well be able to really push for the title over Manchester City.
