Ray Parlour hammers Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy for decision to furlough staff

Ray Parlour has told Alan Brazil’s Sports Breakfast Show on TalkSPORT (09:40am, Thursday) that Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy has made a “horrendous” error in furloughing staff, but accepting a stadium bonus.

Tottenham announced on Tuesday that they have reduced 550 members of non-playing staff’s wages by 20 per cent, and that they will rake in furlough support from the government where appropriate.

However, the likes of Harry Kane and Tanguy Ndombele, who are Tottenham’s two top earners – taking home £200,000 a week and £170,000 a week (Spotrac) – will not give up a single penny of their wages, as per the club’s intructions.

Reports have now emerged, as per the Standard, that Tottenham’s accounts have claimed that chairman Levy earned a whopping £3million bonus for his work in securing Spurs’ new stadium. Arsenal icon Parlour hammered Levy.

“The timing of Daniel Levy getting a £3million bonus is absolutely horrendous. Then he has deferred pay from some of Spurs staff. These people need the money to live on. Lives are at stake – that is what is wrong in football at the moment,” Parlour said.

TBR’s view – Tottenham need to follow Leeds example

Leeds are one of a number of high-profile clubs to have gone down a different route, and reduce the wages of the playing staff and coaching staff in order to cover those of the non-playing staff.

Spurs announced they made a near-£70million profit from the 2018-19 campaign, and yet they have decided to use government money to pay some of their staff – all that while Levy has accepted an enormous seven-figure bonus.

Levy deserves enormous criticism for his handling of the situation.
