Ray Parlour amazed Lucas Torreira's not getting chance for Arsenal
Ray Parlour has told The Debate on Sky Sports (broadcast on 29/10; 22:29) that he is amazed that Lucas Torreira has not been given more of a chance by Arsenal boss Unai Emery.
No Gunners outfield player has been named on the bench more often than Torreira in the Premier League this season.
The 23-year-old has started eight of Arsenal’s 10 league games on the bench. And he is yet to complete 90 minutes in the top flight this term. The situation has frustrated a large number of Arsenal fans for some time, particularly with Granit Xhaka struggling.
And with the captain lashing out at the supporters at the weekend, many may well be hoping that Emery decides to hand Torreira a more prominent role moving forward.
And ahead of the clash with Liverpool on Wednesday, Parlour claimed that he cannot believe how little Torreira has played, and suggested that he would back him to impress in the role that Xhaka has played.
“I’ve always been amazed that Torreira’s not had a chance to play where he plays, because he’s showed signs that he can play that role,” he told The Debate.
“And I always think that Torreira’s playing in the wrong position when he plays. So maybe it’s an opportunity for him to get in the side now.”
Emery’s handling of Torreira’s situation has seen the Arsenal boss come in for a lot of criticism. Xhaka has been poor this season, and some fans have felt that the Uruguayan would be a much better option in the middle of the park.
Interestingly, Torreira looked shaken by Sunday’s events involving Xhaka. But perhaps, it may turn out to be a moment that he really benefits from if he is now able to take his chance.
