Liverpool won 3-0 against Middlesbrough on the final day of the season to clinch Champions League qualification ahead of Arsenal.

Although the top four isn’t the end goal for the Reds, it is a step in the right direction under Jurgen Klopp and provides a platform that they can push on from.

It will be interesting to see how the side do next season in the Champions League as their game is better suited to playing against the better teams, as their record against the top-six shows.

Here are how their players rated at Anfield on Sunday…

Simon Mignolet – The Belgian delivered another assured performance in the Liverpool goal and has played a major role during the second half of the season. He looks much better than he has in years gone by and he is finally reaching the level of a top-four goalkeeper. 7

Nathaniel Clyne – It was a decent display from the left-back, who was solid at the back and offered support in the attacking half. He came close to scoring with a powerful drive in the first-half and played his part in the win. 6

Joel Matip – The centre back ended his first season in England in a positive manner and helped his side to a clean sheet. The 25-year-old was comfortable in possession and completed 88% of his passes during the match. He will have a big part to play over the coming years. 7

Dejan Lovren – There is a section of the Liverpool support that don’t want Lovren to be a starting centre back at the club and he showed why on Sunday. He was clumsy in a challenge in the first-half and was lucky not to concede a penalty. If the referee had punished him, the outcome of the match could have been different. 5

James Milner – It has been a good season for the makeshift left-back as he has adjusted well to his new position. He completed four tackles on Sunday with a 100% success rate, playing his part in the final day victory. 7

Gini Wijaldum – There were some that doubted his ability to contribute in the big matches when he was signed last summer, but the Dutchman has become one of the team’s most important players. He has frequently stepped up when the side have needed inspiration and his powerful finish for the first goal provided the Reds with the confidence they needed to win the game. 9

Emre Can – The German has grown into the season and has found the perfect role at the base of the Liverpool midfield. He completed three ball recoveries and was impressive in his distribution with a pass success rate of 93%. At the age of 23, he will want to push on over the coming years and the Champions League will the experience at the highest level that he needs. 6

Philippe Coutinho – The Brazilian has ended the season in fine form and it was he delivered another excellent performance on Sunday. He scored the second goal from a free kick and completed seven dribbles, highlighting the problems that he caused the Middlesbrough defence. 8

Adam Lallana – He will never be the star of the Liverpool side, but his consistency makes him an important part of it. The 29-year-old completed four key passes, in addition to scoring the third goal of the match to put the result beyond doubt. 7

Daniel Sturridge – It has been a positive end to the season for the England international striker and he was lively in attack. Although he didn’t get on the scoresheet, his movement opened up space for others in the team to exploit. His future at Anfield is uncertain, but he has played his part in their strong end to the season and will be hoping to stay injury-free next year in order to make a bigger impact.

Roberto Firmino – There are few more intelligent movers in the Premier League than Roberto Firmino and he was very impressive during the match against Middlesbrough. He completed four key passes and got the assist for the first goal. A strong performance to end the season and help his side to a top-four finish. 8
