Rating likelihood of 14 players reportedly eyed by Newcastle, since takeover

Amanda Staveley’s efforts to finally oust Mike Ashley as owner of Newcastle United is reportedly edging closer, and has seen plenty of players linked with The Toon – given reports claiming the owners will make Newcastle richer than any other side.

Here are 14 players linked since the takeover news, and the likelihood they will join.

Antoine Griezmann: 1/10. – Having only joined Barcelona last summer, Griezmann is one of the world’s best players. No amount of money would convince the Frenchman of a move to Tyneside. (Sport Mediaset)

Edinson Cavani: 3/10 – Out of contract at Paris Saint-Germain, the experienced striker is a target for plenty of clubs. But recent suggestions are that Cavani wants to leave Europe in the coming months. (ESPN)

Arturo Vidal: 4/10 – Slightly more likely to join Newcastle than Cavani, Vidal is due to enter the last year of his Barcelona contract. But Vidal turns 33 in May and would be an expensive buy for a player quickly deteriorating. (ITA Sport Press).

Dries Mertens: 5/10 – The names do not get any smaller. Mertens has been linked with Roma, Chelsea, Inter Milan and most recently Liverpool. Napoli want to keep the 32-year-old, but he is on a free in June. (ESPN)

Tete: 6/10 – A Shakhtar Donetsk wonderkid, Tete has sparkled in the early stages of his career at 20 years of age. However, the report claims the Ukranian side want a whopping £61million. Likely to be keen, he is yet to prove such a fee (Globo Esporte).

Moussa Dembele: 6/10 – Newcastle need a striker. Dembele is likely to move to the Premier League. Could that be Newcastle? Certainly a possibility, though Chelsea is surely much more likely. (Bleacher Report)

Radja Nainggolan: 6/10 – Certainly likely to leave Inter Milan this summer, Newcastle have a chance of landing Nainggolan. But again, he is unlikely to join Newcastle given he is the wrong side of 30 (CalcioMercato).

Kalidou Koulibaly: 7/10 – A move for the Napoli giant could rest on whether Rafa Benitez returns. The duo worked together at Napoli and Koulibaly is a fan. Whether The Toon can outmuscle other huge European clubs is in the air (Foot Mercato).

Fabio Borini: 7/10 – Arguably the only player who Newcastle could have signed before a takeover. Out of contract at Verona, Borini would surely jump at a Newcastle move. Given their potential resources, Newcastle can do better (TuttoHellasVerona).

Emerson: 7/10 – The Barcelona defender is on loan at Real Betis. Newcastle need a right-back and it makes sense to sign the £17.5m-rated one-time Brazil star. Only a seven, though, as Tottenham, Everton and West Ham are also keen (SPORT).

Willian: 8/10 – Available on a free, proven in the Premier League and a winger. Newcastle do face competition, but the chance to shine as the club’s best player will prove tempting. Contact has been made with player’s agent (ESPN).

Tanguy Kouassi: 9/10 – PSG teenager is out of contract this summer, and has starred under Thomas Tuchel in his senior outings. Leeds are the only other competitor for his signature. Newcastle stand a proper chance. (Le10Sport)

Faitout Maouassa: 9/10 – Newcastle need a left-back, with Danny Rose and Jetro Willems only on loan. A bargain at £10million, surely the Toon stand a strong chance of landing the Rennes flyer. (L’Equipe).

Nabil Fekir: 9/10 – The man that can take Newcastle forward. Of the right age, more than affordable for the new owners at £43million, and just the kind of big name that can excite supporters. Newcastle must sign Fekir. (Foot Mercato).
