'This year': Raphinha now makes new claim about Marcelo Bielsa's training at Leeds after his departure
Leeds United winger Raphinha has been speaking about his former boss Marcelo Bielsa and how he compares to new coach, Jesse Marsch.
Bielsa left Leeds a few months back, with American manager Marsch taking the reins and initially doing well. However, the Whites have slipped right back into the danger zone and key injuries to big players have left them looking over their shoulder at the bottom three.
It’s widely known that Marsch has opted to change things up since taking over. Indeed, one of the big things spoken about was how the players were apparently drained from Bielsa’s intense methods. However, rather than criticise things, Raphinha has appeared to defend his former manager.
“Marcelo had a way of working that was very demanding during his time in charge, which helped the team a lot. Four years he worked here. This year we ended up having bad luck in many, many games, where his training was very intense, each day of the week was tense,” Raphinha said on Stadium Astro.
“Training was more intense that the other but I think this helped us to arrive at games well prepared to achieve results.
Maybe if we were not so prepared for these games we wouldn’t be able to do it, but it’s that thing each coach has a different way of dealing. Marcelo had this way of demanding the team to the maximum.Jesse Marsch also has a very demanding way of working, but different people relate it a little more. It doesn’t stop being intense, work remains intense.”
Leeds could slip into the bottom three this weekend, with Everton just two points behind them. Crucially, the Toffees also hold a game in hand over Marsch’s side.
TBR’s View: Raphinha Defending Bielsa Shows The Respect He Has At Leeds
The Argentinian is a legend of the club and while there might be those who sit from afar and take pot shots, those inside Thorp Arch know all too well the impact he had at the club.
Bielsa is a legend of Elland Road and Raphinha is clearly defending his former manager here. Sure, Marsch is doing his own thing and Raphinha has even spoken of some the differences in his own game now since his arrival.
But Bielsa will always be popular, and in a way, it’s nice to see the Leeds players having his back.
