Raphinha has told Leeds United’s official website that he has spoken to players about manager Marcelo Bielsa and cannot wait to work under the Argentine tactician – after completing his deadline-day move to Elland Road.

Raphinha, 23, completed a £17million plus add-ons (BBC) transfer to the Premier League club just a day after scoring for French club Rennes during a 2-2 draw against Stade Reims. That evening, he travelled to Yorkshire to secure a move.

On Monday morning, Raphinha underwent a Leeds medical and a deal was completed in the final hour of Monday’s deadline day. It sees the Whites add a fourth big-money addition, after Diego Llorente, Rodrigo and Robin Koch.

Helder Costa and Illan Meslier also joined for more than a combined £20million after loan spells, while the Whites also added Jack Harrison on loan and numerous Under-23 players. Raphinha commented on his excitment to work under Bielsa.

“Before I came here I’d spoken to other players about Marcelo Bielsa and they told me he is a really demanding coach, which is something I like,” Raphinha said. “I like working with demanding coaches who can really get the best out of me.”

TBR’s view – Can Raphinha shine under Bielsa?

Bielsa only suggests players that can thrive under his high-intensity style of play. Rodrigo was brought to the club from Valencia given his enormous work rate and versatility, while Koch was signed due to his ability to play out from the back.

Raphinha is another example of Bielsa’s style in a signing. Unbelievably quick, skillful, creative and with an eye for goal, Raphinha is also renowned for his work rate. He can play on either flank or behind the striker, and adds flair to Leeds’ side.

Will he start? Costa and Harrison are first choice out wide and have starred since the start of the season. Raphinha may have to wait for a chance, to begin with.
