Rangers youngster Glenn Middleton’s season dealt another blow

Had Rangers fans been told 15 months ago that Glenn Middleton would go into the early stages of February 2020 awaiting his debut for his second loan club of the campaign and the chance to work under his fifth manager of the season, it is likely that the Ibrox faithful would have been left somewhat baffled.

It was November 8th 2018 when Middleton appeared to confirm that he belonged in Steven Gerrard’s first-team with the Gers.

That evening, the winger scored a superb goal to put the Light Blues 3-2 up against Spartak Moscow in the Europa League.

Unsurprisingly, Middleton would remain in and around the squad for the rest of the year.

But he appeared to fall out of favour by the end of the season. He has made just three appearances for Rangers in 2019 – with none coming this term.

Instead, the winger was given the chance to leave Ibrox on loan midway through August.

The move to Hibernian looked to be a really good opportunity for the 20-year-old to prove that he is ready for the highest level. However, his season has not exactly gone to plan.

His last appearance at Easter Road came in October with Jack Ross not picking the youngster once after he succeeded Paul Heckingbottom.

It was little surprise therefore, when he returned to Ibrox in January. But his return was brief.

Middleton joined Bradford City on deadline day, with the move to Gary Bowyer’s men being confirmed on Saturday. The confirmation came too late for the former Norwich man to feature against Oldham at the weekend.

A heavy defeat proved to be the final straw for Bowyer however. His exit was announced on Monday.

So remarkably, Middleton is preparing to work under his second manager before he has had the chance to make his debut for the Bantams.

It also means that Middleton will have worked under five different managers this term.

The situation is hardly going to help the starlet as he looks to make the grade at Ibrox. Of course, Bowyer probably had little time to work with Middleton.

But he is the manager that the wide-man signed for in January. So he may now waiting nervously to see whether he is going to be involved or out in the cold as he was when Paul Heckingbottom left Hibs.

The change of manager could just as easily prove inspired for Middleton. But right now, you could understand why he may be looking forward to this season concluding already.
