Rangers blow hands 28-year-old chance to show Steven Gerrard what he can do

Rangers have been dealt a blow today with news that goalkeeper Allan McGregor must serve a two-match ban.

The Scottish goalkeeper was cited by the SFA’s compliance officer for a studs-up challenge in a 4-2 win over Aberdeen recently.

The Gers will naturally be disappointed with the news that the appeal has been thrown out and the ban remains.

Steven Gerrard won’t be happy.

He now loses his goalkeeper for a league game against St. Johnstone and for the Scottish Cup replay with Kilmarnock.

All is not lost for the boss, however.

In reserve, Rangers have the uncompromising figure of Wes Foderingham.

Prior to this season, Foderingham spent three years as the first choice ‘keeper at Ibrox, so is no stranger to life in the first-team.

The 28-year-old will have been unhappy to lose his place in the side following Gerrard’s arrival.

Foderingham has typically been a safe pair of hands for the Gers and he will see McGregor’s suspension as his chance to shine.

After just one league game this season, it is fair to say he will be pretty disgruntled.

As McGregor approaches 40 it is reasonable to suggest that he won’t be playing for much longer.

The challenge is there for Foderingham.

During the next two games, he needs to go out there with a point to prove to his boss.

If McGregor is to call time on his career any time soon then the backup goalkeeper needs to show Gerrard that he doesn’t need to go and sign another one.
