Rangers’ task of signing Joe Aribo just got even harder

Rangers, along with several other clubs, have been linked with a move for Charlton Athletic midfielder Joe Aribo in recent weeks.

The Guardian recently suggested that Steven Gerrard is keen to bring the 22-year-old to Ibrox this summer.

Rangers are always on the hunt for top young talent and Aribo has had an excellent season in League One with The Addicks. His contract expires this summer and it appears he is set to end his four-year association with the club.

Rangers, along with all other interested parties, might now have a harder task on their hands trying to convince Aribo into a move.

Aribo now has guaranteed Championship football at his feet if he decides to remain with Charlton. Lee Bowyer’s side defeated Sunderland at Wembley in the play-off final yesterday.

Speaking after the game, as quoted by the Sunday Post, Bowyer explained his hope that the rangy midfielder will sign a new deal and remain with the London club.

“Joe Aribo, I’m hoping he will now sign, and that he stays and keeps learning.”

Rangers already face plenty of competition for Aribo. Now staying at his current club suddenly looks a far more attractive proposition for the youngster.

Gerrard will have a lot to do if he is to convince Aribo that Rangers is the place for him.
