A last-gasp Steven Davis goal has given Rangers hope in their Champions League qualifying tie against Malmo. The Gers were defeated 2-1 last night and face a massive clash at Ibrox next week if they’re to keep their group stage dream alive.

Despite Davis nothing towards the end of the game, it was talisman Cedric Itten who earned praise from the Rangers fan base. Supporters took to Twitter after the contest to reserve a special mention.

The result has to be considered a shock loss. Malmo were in control for large parts of the game and they’ll fancy their chances of progressing to the next stage now.

For Steven Gerrard, it’s back to the drawing board. His team have enjoyed a brilliant 12 months but next week Rangers face arguably their biggest game since Gerrard checked in at Ibrox.

Itten signed for Rangers last summer and was largely used as a backup option during 2020/21. He found the net six times and registered three assists during 38 appearances for the Light Blues.

This season, he will hope to kick on. Gerrard will undoubtedly see him as one of the future, although he should still get plenty of chances in the team.

At 24 there is bags of time on his side and it’s important that the Rangers man continues to develop at the club.

Rangers fans happy with Itten performance against Malmo

For large parts of last night’s contest, the Swiss talisman was isolated. Indeed, it infuriated the fan base that once he’d gone off, the Gers started crossing balls into the box.

Had Rangers done that when Itten was on the pitch he might have fancied scoring given his prowess in the air.

The £14,000-a-week player did come in for some praise from Rangers fans though. They were happy with his performance and believe should have kept him on beyond the 63rd minute when he subbed him off.

Here is what the club’s supporters were saying on Twitter as Rangers were defeated by the Swedish champions.
