Rangers are close to bolstering their squad with the permanent signing of Southampton attacking midfielder Steven Davis, according to the Scottish Sun.
The 34-year-old has been on loan at Ibrox since the January transfer window. Boss Steven Gerrard has viewed Davis as more of a peripheral figure, starting just nine games.

It would seem the experienced performer has left a lasting impression on Gerrard though, with a deal seemingly forthcoming.
The Gers have already landed Jordan Jones (Kilmarnock) and Jake Hastie (Motherwell) ahead of next season. One factor in Davis earning himself a new deal could be the dressing room influence he might have on the younger players.
Davis joined on loan from the Saints having fallen down the pecking order at St Mary’s. After 226 appearances, it was back to Ibrox for the veteran who previously played nearly 200 times for the club.
TBR Verdict
Davis’ experience and professionalism must be two of the main reasons for Gerrard pursuing a permanent deal.
Having used him sparingly since January it seems unlikely that he will become a first-team regular next season.

That doesn’t mean he can’t do a job elsewhere around the club though. When injuries and suspension start to pile up he would be an adequate backup, whilst his experience can help the younger players on the training ground.
The challenge for Gerrard next season is to try and topple Celtic. Davis alone won’t help to achieve that, but he’s a decent squad player.
