Rangers enjoyed their most comfortable afternoon of the season on Sunday in the third round of the Scottish Cup, but a sterner test awaits them in the next round.
A 4-0 victory over Cove Rangers at Ibrox ensured they will meet Celtic in the fourth round, with that game due to take place on either Saturday 17 April or Sunday 18.
It was Jermain Defoe who opened the scoring for Rangers against the League One part-timers, and he says knowing another derby was at stake served as an extra motivation for his side.
Steven Gerrard’s men were sharp from the outset, and at no point did an upset seem on the cards.
Victory was assured by half-time, with Defoe’s goal followed by a quick-fire Kemar Roofe double and one from youngster Nathan Patterson.
As quoted by Record Sport, Defoe has spoken about the desire to add another medal after the Premiership was wrapped up last month.
Asked if drawing Celtic was a factor in motivating the team, he replied: “Of course it was. That’s the game that you want and we’re delighted to progress.
“We’re looking forward to it, the club and the fans. Everyone’s looking forward to it. If we can get the Double then it will be brilliant for everyone.
“You want more medals. Every competition you play in you want to win and get the trophies. On a personal level, it was a massive dream come true to win a league title.
“In any league it’s always difficult to win a title because you have to be consistent and the best team in the league. Having done that, it’s a great feeling. And you want more after that.”
Rangers return to league action in their first game following the Premiership split on Sunday, when they welcome Hibs to Ibrox.
