Rangers star applauded by his country's media, after stunning Monday result

Rangers star Steven Davis produced a stunning display as Northern Ireland held Italy to a draw – and the Belfast Telegraph has heaped praise on Davis.

Italy failed to qualify at the top of the group thanks to the 0-0 draw on Monday. Switzerland, instead, finished top – while Italy go into the playoffs.

Northern Ireland were sensational. While they had nothing to play for apart from pride, that did not stop Ian Baraclough’s men in their fight.

They stopped Roberto Mancini’s Euro 2020 winners – despite the likes of Fede Chiesa, Lorenzo Insigne, Domencio Berardi and Jorginho starting.

Rangers ace Davis clocked up his 132nd cap for Northern Ireland, as he looks to stretch the record as much as possible. He turns 37 in January.

He proved, once again, age is just a number – with more than 800 games under his belt. The Belfast Telegraph have him an 8/10.

“Just keeps rolling back the years. Someone check his birth certificate. Pressed well and contributed more excellent defensive work.”

Davis shines for Northern Ireland: A sign for new Rangers manager?

Rangers are yet to announce Steven Gerrard’s replacement. But it looks more than likely, that it will be Gio van Bronckhorst this week.

Davis has been in and out of the Rangers side, starting just two of his side’s last seven Premiership outings. John Lundstram has been preferred.

But his brilliant display against a strong Italy side will serve as a reminder to the incoming Rangers gaffer that he is still more than capable.
