Rangers are in with a fantastic chance of reaching the last 16 of the Europa League this week, and yet, Steven Gerrard would be forgiven for feeling that he has a number of problems he needs to address.
The Gers have faltered since returning from the winter break. It is going to take an incredible turnaround for the Light Blues to end their wait for the league title this season.
And the latest blow came at the weekend against St Johnstone. Rangers looked set to get themselves out of jail with a 2-1 victory after initially going behind. However, the Gers conceded a late equaliser to concede more ground in the title race.
Unfortunately for Gerrard, it would arguably take a lot less time to list the players who got pass marks at McDiarmid Park than to reel off those who struggled.
But perhaps, no player endured a more disappointing afternoon than Nikola Katic. Katic appears to be an incredibly popular member of the squad amongst the fans. But he was extremely poor against Tommy Wright’s side and played a key role in both of the goals Rangers conceded.
With Filip Helander injured, Gerrard looks to have few options to turn to. It would be a huge gamble to use George Edmundson against Braga – despite his potential.
And the problem perhaps highlights the need to strengthen their options in the summer.
And that should perhaps tempt Gerrard to look at James Chester at the end of the season.
The Aston Villa man is out of contract at the end of the season (via Transfermarkt). And as he has not played in the Premier League this term and was loaned out to Stoke City in January, it would be no surprise to see him released when his deal expires.
Admittedly, signing Chester may be a risk. He has struggled with injury at times.
And Spotrac shows that he earns £30,000-a-week at Villa. So he may not come cheap, even as a free signing.
But the 31-year-old has made 350 career club appearances, and was Villa’s captain as they sealed promotion last season. He has also made a promising start to life on loan at Stoke.
The Wales international has the experience to be a very shrewd addition on a free transfer this summer.
So perhaps Gerrard should roll the dice and approach the centre-back about a move to Ibrox.
