Rangers’ hunt for a striker has led them to target Fran Sol, according to The Mirror via The Daily Record.

The 26-year-old has scored 12 goals this season for Willem II and Rangers have sent scouts to watch him.

With his contract expiring at the end of the season, Rangers are eyeing a cut price deal for the Spaniard.

But they face competition from Celtic, Leeds, Swansea, Burnley, Swansea, Cardiff and Huddersfield.

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has bemoaned the fact that outcast duo Carlos Pena and Eduardo Herrera are on hefty wages at Ibrox.

Neither Pena or Herrera are featuring in Gerrard’s plans and both were sent on loan to Mexico this summer.

But according to The Daily Record, they pick up a combined total of £50,000 in wages.

Gerrard knows that it will be tough to get them off the wage books this January to free up funds for recruitment.

Ovie Ejaria’s loan spell at Rangers was cut short this weekend with the midfielder returning to Liverpool.

With Ejaria gone, Gerrard needs to find a suitable replacement in the January transfer window.

And according to The Scottish Sun, the Gers will now step up their efforts to land Everton’s Kieran Dowell on loan.

The 21-year-old, who represents England at under-21 level, is out of favour at Everton and could look to replicate last season’s success at Nottingham Forest if he moves to Ibrox.
