Scotland boss Alex McLeish was disappointed that Allan McGregor decided to retire from international duty but he understands his reasoning, The Daily Record reports.

McGregor has retired because he wants to preserve his body for Rangers duty by resting during international breaks but McLeish wanted the 37-year-old to be the next Gianluigi Buffon.

McLeish said: “He wants to prolong his club career. We were hoping he would do a Buffon and stay on until 40 but he has chosen to go and now it’s the chance for someone else.”

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard admitted that he was too angry to talk to his players after watching his side crash out of the Scottish Cup.

Aberdeen progressed to the next round of the cup with a 2-0 victory and left Gerrard questioning his players’ desire.

Speaking to RangersTV, Gerrard said: “They wanted it more in certain areas of the pitch, which is a major concern. I haven’t gone in to speak to the players because I don’t think it’s the right time. I don’t feel ready to speak to them just yet because I’m angry.”
