Talks between Steven Gerrard and soon-to-be free agent Mexer reportedly took place in the week, but it seems that Gerrard is not the only Rangers man looking to lure the African defender to Ibrox.
French newspaper L’Equipe claimed last week that Gerrard took a trip to Rennes in a bid to sign the French side’s defender. The 30-year-old rock is out of contract this summer, and Gerrard is hoping to sign him on a free.
Mexer is one of the first names on Rennes’ team sheet, and scored a crucial equaliser in Rennes’ 2-2 penalty-shootout win over PSG to win the Coupe De France. On a a free, he is an excellent signing.
Not only has Mexer since uploaded a mysterious post to his Instagram feed, which he captions “walking into the future”, but Rangers star Daniel Candeias replied, “the future is here my friend”.
Candeias and Mexer are former teammates, having both played for Portuguese side Nacional between 2010 and 2014.

TBR’s view
Mexer is a household name in the top tier of French football, and it certainly would be an enormous coup if Rangers could land the defender – let alone on a free.
Pace, power and precision at the back are met with composure while in possession but also an aerial prowess that leaves strikers with little to feed off. Mexer is an excellent defender.
The presence of Candeias could help Rangers land Mexer, with the 44-time Mozambique international more likely to join a club where he knows some of the players.
