Rangers must change Matt Polster transfer stance after impressive display

It was not at all surprising to hear Steven Gerrard tell Rangers’s official website that there were no positives to take from the Gers’ performance during Sunday’s defeat.

Rangers have thrown away the title race advantage they secured before the winter break. They led 1-0 during the second-half at Hearts, but ultimately came away pointless after another poor display at Tynecastle.

Gerrard may have felt there were no positives. But perhaps that assessment may be a little unfair on one member of the Rangers squad.

After a tough first-half for Jon Flanagan, Gerrard decided to make a change at the break. The Rangers boss bought Matt Polster on.

And the decision was arguably vindicated as Polster looked a lot better than the Englishman. Defensively, he probably did not have a lot to do, but he did impress going forward.

Polster – who is still awaiting his first league start for the Gers – linked up well with the likes of Scott Arfield and Joe Aribo at times. And he also showcased some vision with a couple of long passes that could have led to opportunities for the visitors.

It was a performance that perhaps saw Polster show that he is a better understudy for James Tavernier. Tavernier’s absence was particularly noticeable during the first-half with Flanagan less-inclined to push forward.

TBR View – Rangers need to change reported stance

And it was certainly a display that should ensure that Rangers change their transfer stance on the American’s future.

The Daily Record reported in December that Polster was amongst the players Rangers were open to letting go of. It was suggested that they would consider loan or permanent offers for the 26-year-old this month.

With the deadline looming, an Ibrox exit was perhaps looking unlikely anyway.

But, on a day that Rangers would happily forget, Polster arguably showed that he does have a role to play for Gerrard’s side moving forward.
