Rangers must break Aberdeen hoodoo or title will be Celtic’s to lose

Rangers travel to third-placed Aberdeen on Wednesday night now six points behind Celtic in the race for the Scottish Premiership title.

Steven Gerrard has overseen a title challenge during his first season at Ibrox but Brendan Rodgers’ side are hitting their stride and that has reduced the margin for error across town.

Rangers have played Aberdeen three times so far this season and failed to win yet; the Dons knocked them out of the Betfred Cup back in October and have taken four points from their two league meetings.

The first of those came back on the opening day of the season, when Aberdeen snatched a late point after Alfredo Morelos’ early red card put Rangers’ back against the wall.

After that August encounter, Gerrard was quoted by the Telegraph as saying that his side were ‘miles better’ than their hosts, but they are yet to prove it with a victory this season.

That has to change on Wednesday, or Celtic will have the opportunity to go up to nine points clear atop the table, with a better goal difference to boot.

Rangers could still win the league from that position but it would be increasingly difficult. Now is the time for Gerrard’s to back up that early bold claim and overcome their Aberdeen hoodoo and keep the pressure on Celtic.
