Jamie Barjonas has hinted that he could be involved for Rangers against Standard Liege on Thursday night after posting a picture on his Instagram story from the Belgian city – despite failing to make a single appearance for the Gers this term.

The 21-year-old midfielder has endured a difficult spell at Rangers in which he struggles to break into the senior side, but continues to be a part of the squad as back-up. He has been loaned out to Raith Rovers and most recently, Partick Thistle.

The Rangers academy product has entered the final year of his contract at Ibrox and his long-term future is up in the air. The Gers have been forced to leave out Jermain Defoe, Jordan Jones and George Edmondson from the Europa League squad.

Kemar Roofe has travelled with the Rangers squad after a spell on the sidelines with injury, while Nikola Katic remains a long-term absentee. Bongani Zungu continues to await his debut, as he remains in quarantine.

But Barjonas is eligible to play for Rangers on Thursday night in their first Europa League group game, as he is under the age of 21 and can be included on the ‘B-list’. His post on Instagram suggests he could be included in the Rangers side.

TBR’s view – Barjonas deserves a chance at Rangers

Just nine senior appearances for Rangers – spaced across three years following his senior debut under Pedro Caixinha in 2017 – is a bit harsh on the Scotland Under-21 star. He deserves a go, perhaps not against Liege, but in the cups and in the league.

Barjonas has only been included in the Rangers squad on two occasions this season and is yet to make his first senior appearance – remaining an unused substitute against Hibernian and Ross County. He deserves a chance, but not on Thursday.
