Report: Rangers interested in Sweden international Martin Olsson

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard is keen to bolster his defensive ranks with a move for free agent Martin Olsson, according to Swedish news outlet Expressen.

The Gers finished nine points behind fierce rivals Celtic last season and Gerrard will go in search of quality additions in the summer.

Olsson has recently been released by Swansea City; having missed the second half of last season with a ruptured Achilles suffered in December.

The 31-year-old left-back will be keen to prove his fitness with a new club in the summer and he would certainly solve a problem area for Rangers.

Lee Wallace has now left the club after his contract expired and options are limited at left-back.

A 47-cap Sweden international, Olsson boasts nearly 200 appearances in the Premier League and a further 107 in the second tier of English football.

According to the report, Rangers will battle Nottingham Forest for his signature.

TBR Verdict

Olsson would be seen as a coup for a Scottish Premiership outfit.

With a bucket-load of experience in the top two divisions of English football, he could be a real asset for Rangers if the club can pull off the deal.

The Swede is quick, strong at both ends of the pitch and puts a decent delivery into the box.

One particular worry for Gerrard will be Olsson’s fitness. Achilles injuries are never straight forward and the defender will probably have to prove he can overcome his serious injury before any deal is struck.
