Reported Glasgow Rangers target Jack Wilshere is eager for a club to give him the opportunity to show what he’s capable of, amid continuing links with Steven Gerrard’s charges at Ibrox.
Wilshere is a free agent, having agreed to have his contract with English outfit West Ham cancelled by mutual consent at the end of last season.
The 28-year-old made just 19 competitive appearances for the Hammers in the two years since joining from Arsenal.
Despite rumours claiming he’s struggled to stay fit, Wilshere said on social media that he’s been injury-free for the past eight months, and that he’s just not been picked to play.
A number of clubs are said to be keen on the Englishman, with talkSPORT claiming earlier this month that Rangers interest is “genuine”.
In conversation with BBC Sport, Wilshere said: “It is important to find a club where I am going to play, be an important player and be happy.
“I don’t want to rush into anything. It has to be the right team in the right country. I am open to Europe or wherever.”
In terms of his fitness, he added: “I have been fully fit for a while but without games you don’t get up to speed or get the minutes you need.
“In a year’s time, I would like to have 20-25 games behind me at a new club and be looking forward to the future. I feel I have much more to give. I just want to be given the opportunity to show it.”
Although Wilshere has had his injury issues in the past, he’s now fit again and, given his quality and experience, would make a superb addition to many teams.
He’d need a while to get back up to match fitness, but with Gerrard having numerous midfielders at his disposal, it’s not like Wilshere would desperately need to be rushed into action.
Admittedly, you’d wonder if there’s any need for Wilshere at Rangers precisely because of their well-stocked midfield, but it’s not very often that you could snap up a world-class player for nothing.
