Mark Hateley has told the Ten10 podcast that Rangers star Ryan Kent is just the player Leeds need this summer amid reports that the ex-Liverpool attacker is a target for Marcelo Bielsa’s side – having been previously linked.
Kent, 24, has had a hand in 26 goals during 50 league and cup appearances throughout 2020-21 – scoring 12 goals and creating 26 more. On Sunday, he caused havoc against Old Firm rivals Celtic as Steven Gerrard’s side won 4-1.
The Daily Record claim Leeds are to return in the race to sign Kent this summer, but that Rangers are looking to extend their £7million signing’s contract – which currently has two years left to run until the summer of 2023.
Rangers legend Hateley, who scored 115 goals in 222 games for Rangers, thinks Leeds will return with another offer to sign Kent this summer – and believes that he is just the player Leeds need, suggesting a price could be £20million.
“Listen, Leeds have got him on their radar right, they have twice come in for him,” Hateley said. “They will be hoping it’s third time lucky. They have done well down in the English Premier League.
“They need somebody that can open something up in the blink of an eye, Kent is the boy that can do that. You pay £20m to stick somebody on the bench in England. Kent has got this ability to turn a game in the blink of an eye.”
TBR’s view – Is Kent better of staying at Rangers?
Kent has to weigh up which is best for his career. In Scotland, he is probably Rangers most-exciting player. He makes things happen, he scores and creates goals and is playing with enormous confidence under Liverpool legend Gerrard.
He has the chance to play Champions League football and retain a second Scottish title, or he can chance his arm down south in a side where he might not even start. Surely, he is better off remaining at Ibrox for another season.
