Steven Gerrard’s Glasgow Rangers “know” that the Scottish Premiership title is not heading to Ibrox this season, according to Sky Sports pundit Charlie Nicholas.
Last summer, Rangers manager Gerrard bolstered the Ibrox side’s ranks significantly and the Light Blues were impressive in the first half of the 2019-20 campaign.
Indeed, Rangers went into the winter break on the back of a superb 2-1 win at Old Firm rivals Celtic, which aside from earning the Gers bragging rights, also put them within two points of the Hoops with a game in hand.
Since the restart of league proceedings, however, things have gone pear-shaped for Gerrard and co to say the least, with far too many points dropped, while Celtic haven’t put a foot wrong and now sit 12 points clear at the top of the table.
Looking ahead to Rangers’ Europa League round-of-32 second leg at Braga, Nicholas not only suggested that Rangers themselves have all but thrown in the towel, but also tipped them to go out of Europe this week.

“Rangers know the title is gone,” Nicholas wrote on Sky Sports. “Steven Gerrard has been unhappy with the defence and questioned it quite a bit. It has been poor and evident for all to see.
“Gerrard has introduced the fighting spirit to this Rangers team. They have a really good away record in the Europa League, but I fear Braga are too good for them.
“It has been amazing for them to get here but I think they will go out on away goals. You cannot trust the defence at the minute, while Alfredo Morelos is suspended, so this spells trouble.”
TBR View:
As frustrating as it may be to hear Nicholas’ claim, the truth is, unless Celtic experience a huge drop in form at the same time as Rangers get their act together and put together a run similar to that of their rivals, bringing the title to Ibrox will indeed be an incredibly tall order.
For Celtic to make it 10 consecutive domestic victories in a row, it shows how well they’ve got their act together since being humbled on their own turf by Rangers, who in comparison have lost at Hearts and Kilmarnock, and drawn with Aberdeen and St Johnstone – absolutely not the kind of results you can afford to get when competing for the title.
